Forms & Strengths

Dental paste: Prednisolone 0.5% with adjunct agents
Oral paste/gel combinations for mucosal application

Adult Dosing

Apply a small amount of paste to the affected oral mucosal lesion 2 to 4 times daily
Use after meals and at bedtime for optimal contact time
Limit use to short durations (typically less than 7-10 days) unless directed otherwise

Pediatric Dosing

Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not well established
Use lowest effective dose and shortest duration if prescribed by a specialist

Indications

Temporary relief of symptoms associated with acute inflammatory and ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa
Recurrent aphthous stomatitis
Erosive lichen planus

Mechanism of Action

Topical corticosteroid providing anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive, and antipruritic effects
Suppresses migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and reverses capillary permeability in affected oral tissues

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to prednisolone or any component of the formulation
Untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral infections of the mouth or throat
Herpes simplex infections of the oral cavity

Adverse Reactions

Local burning or stinging upon application
Oral candidiasis with prolonged use
Mucosal atrophy and delayed healing with extended application
Systemic absorption effects possible with high doses or prolonged use

Drug Interactions

Potential for additive immunosuppression with systemic immunosuppressants
Local effects may be altered by concurrent topical antimicrobial treatments in the oral cavity
