calcium silicate
A02AC02
Forms & Strengths
- Oral powder, variable composition
- Combination antacid formulations (tablets and suspensions)
Adult Dosing
- As an antacid/adsorbent: 1 to 2 grams orally as needed for gastric distress
- Typically used in combination products; follow specific manufacturer guidelines for combination regimens
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric populations
- Not recommended for routine use in children due to lack of standard dosing guidelines
Indications
- Temporary relief of hyperacidity associated with gastritis, dyspepsia, and peptic ulcer disease
- Acting as a gastrointestinal adsorbent and protectant
Mechanism of Action
- Neutralizes gastric hydrochloric acid through chemical reaction
- Forms a protective coating over the gastrointestinal mucosa
- Adsorbs toxins and gases in the gastrointestinal tract
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to calcium silicate or any component of the formulation
- Severe renal impairment or failure (risk of hypercalcemia and systemic accumulation)
- Hypercalcemia or pre-existing conditions leading to hypercalcemia
- Fecal impaction or intestinal obstruction
Adverse Reactions
- Constipation
- Acid rebound with prolonged use
- Hypercalcemia with high doses or renal impairment
- Flatulence or abdominal distension
Drug Interactions
- Decreases absorption of concurrently administered oral medications (e.g., tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, iron) due to binding and increased gastric pH
- May enhance the toxic effects of digitalis glycosides if hypercalcemia occurs
- Thiazide diuretics may increase the risk of hypercalcemia when used concomitantly with calcium salts
