Forms & Strengths
- Chewable tablets: 500 mg
- Suspension: 500 mg/5 mL
Adult Dosing
- 1 to 2 tablets (500 mg to 1000 mg) chewed or sucked between meals or when symptoms occur
- Maximum daily dose: typically not to exceed 12 tablets (6 g) daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in children under 12 years not well established; use generally not recommended unless directed by a physician
Indications
- Symptomatic relief of hyperacidity-related conditions such as dyspepsia, heartburn, and sour stomach
- Adjuvant treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers
Mechanism of Action
- Layered double hydroxide antacid containing aluminum and magnesium that neutralizes gastric hydrochloric acid
- Buffers gastric pH and adsorbs pepsin, protecting the gastric mucosa
Contraindications
- Severe renal impairment (risk of aluminum and magnesium accumulation)
- Hypersensitivity to hydrotalcite or any component of the formulation
- Hypophosphatemia
Adverse Reactions
- Constipation or diarrhea (dose-dependent)
- Hypermagnesemia or aluminum toxicity in patients with renal failure with prolonged use
Drug Interactions
- Decreases absorption of concomitantly administered acidic drugs and weak bases (e.g., tetracyclines, iron, fluoroquinolones, ketoconazole)
- Separate administration of hydrotalcite and other oral medications by at least 2 hours
