Forms & Strengths
- Tablet: 20mg, 40mg
- Injection: 20mg/2mL, 20mg/4mL
- Oral suspension: 40mg/5mL
Adult Dosing
- 20-40mg PO q12h
- 20mg IV q12h
- 40mg PO q HS for erosive esophagitis
Pediatric Dosing
- 0.5mg/kg/dose PO q12h for GERD
- 0.25mg/kg/dose IV q12h
Indications
- Treatment and prevention of ulcers
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Heartburn relief
Mechanism of Action
- H2-receptor antagonist
- Reduces gastric acid secretion
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to famotidine or components
- Acute porphyrias
Adverse Reactions
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
Drug Interactions
- Sucralfate (separate administration by 2 hours)
- Atazanavir (avoid concomitant use)
- Ketoconazole (monitor for increased effect)
