Forms & Strengths
- tablets: 10mg, 20mg
- oral suspension
Adult Dosing
- initial dose: 100-200mg/day in divided doses
- maintenance dose: 50-100mg/day
- max dose: 300mg/day
Pediatric Dosing
- not recommended for children under 12 years
- 12-18 years: 50-100mg/day in divided doses
Indications
- gastroesophageal reflux disease
- duodenal ulcer
- gastric ulcer
- mild to moderate esophagitis
Mechanism of Action
- increases mucus production
- inhibits gastric acid secretion
- enhances mucosal protective barrier
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to carbenoxolone
- congestive heart failure
- severe hypertension
- severe liver or kidney disease
Adverse Reactions
- edema
- hypokalemia
- weight gain
- mild to moderate headache
- dizziness
- nausea and vomiting
Drug Interactions
- enhances effect of warfarin and other anticoagulants
- reduces effectiveness of oral antidiabetics
- increases toxicity of digitalis and other cardiac glycosides
- may interact with spironolactone and other potassium-sparing diuretics
