Forms & Strengths
- Oral capsules: 50 mg
- Oral capsules: 100 mg
Adult Dosing
- Gastric ulcer: 50 mg to 100 mg orally three times daily after meals
- Gastritis: 50 mg orally three times daily after meals
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established
Indications
- Treatment of gastric ulcers
- Improvement of gastric mucosal lesions in acute gastritis and chronic gastritis
Mechanism of Action
- Increases the synthesis of gastric mucosal glycoproteins and phospholipids
- Enhances mucosal blood flow and cellular regeneration
- Protects the gastric mucosa against various ulcerogenic agents
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to gefarnate or any component of the formulation
- Severe hepatic impairment
Adverse Reactions
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Dry mouth
- Gastric discomfort
- Elevated liver enzymes (transaminases)
Drug Interactions
- No major clinically significant pharmacokinetic drug interactions reported
- May be used concomitantly with antacids or H2 receptor antagonists
