Forms & Strengths
- Combination capsules: isometheptene mucate 65 mg / dichloralphenazone 100 mg / acetaminophen 325 mg
Adult Dosing
- Vascular headache: 2 capsules initially, then 1 capsule every hour as needed, up to 5 capsules per 12-hour period
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established; use not recommended
Indications
- Treatment of vascular and tension headaches, including migraine
Mechanism of Action
- Sympathomimetic amine causing vasoconstriction of cranial blood vessels to reduce pain; combined with a sedative and analgesic
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to isometheptene or components
- Severe renal disease
- Hepatic impairment
- Severe hypertension
- Organic heart disease
- Glaucoma
- Concomitant MAOI therapy
Adverse Reactions
- Transient dizziness
- Lightheadedness
- Skin rash
- Nervousness
Drug Interactions
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) risk of hypertensive crisis
- Sympathomimetic agents enhance pressor effects
- Beta-blockers potential for unopposed alpha-adrenergic vasoconstriction
