Forms & Strengths
- Tablet: 80 mg
- Solution for injection: 40 mg/4 mL
- Suppository: 40 mg
Adult Dosing
- Oral: 80 mg (1 to 2 tablets) up to 3 times daily during acute spasm
- Intravenous or Intramuscular: 40 mg (1 ampoule) administered during acute spasmodic crisis, may be repeated up to 3 times daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been firmly established
- Use in children is generally not recommended or reserved for specialized clinical settings
Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of painful spasmodic conditions of the gastrointestinal tract
- Spasmodic conditions of the biliary tract
- Spasmodic and painful conditions of the urogenital tract (e.g., renal colic)
- Gynecological conditions associated with smooth muscle spasm (e.g., dysmenorrhea)
Mechanism of Action
- Acts as a musculotropic antispasmodic directly on smooth muscle fibers of the gastrointestinal, biliary, and urogenital tracts
- Exerts a papaverine-like action without inducing anticholinergic side effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to phloroglucinol or any component of the formulation
- History of paralytic ileus or severe obstructive gastrointestinal disorders
Adverse Reactions
- Rare cases of allergic skin reactions (rash, urticaria)
- Anaphylactic shock (extremely rare)
- Hypotension and flushing (infrequently associated with rapid intravenous administration)
Drug Interactions
- Potential enhancement of sedative effects when co-administered with central nervous system depressants
- Avoid concomitant administration with strong analgesics (e.g., morphine and its derivatives) unless strictly monitored, due to potential antagonism of gastrointestinal motility
