Forms & Strengths
- Capsules: alverine citrate 60 mg / simethicone 300 mg
- Capsules: alverine citrate 120 mg / simethicone 300 mg
Adult Dosing
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome: 1 capsule (60 mg to 120 mg alverine citrate) 1 to 3 times daily before meals
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients under 12 years of age
- Not recommended for use in children
Indications
- Symptomatic relief of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Relief of painful abdominal spasm, distension, and flatulence
Mechanism of Action
- Alverine acts as a direct relaxant of gastrointestinal smooth muscle via calcium channel blockade
- Simethicone acts as a defoaming agent to reduce gas bubbles and relieve abdominal distension
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to alverine, simethicone, or any excipient
- Intestinal obstruction
- Paralytic ileus
- History of unexplained jaundice or hepatic dysfunction
Adverse Reactions
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Pruritus and rash
- Rare cases of cytolytic hepatitis
Drug Interactions
- Additive anticholinergic effects when used concomitantly with other antispasmodics
- Potential enhancement of CNS depressant effects with alcohol or sedatives
- No major pharmacokinetic drug-interactions formally established
