Adult Dosing

Indications
- Adjunctive management of peptic ulcer disease
- Treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders characterized by hypermotility and visceral spasm associated with anxiety or tension
Mechanism of Action
- Methylscopolamine acts as a peripheral muscarinic receptor antagonist, reducing gastric acid secretion and gastrointestinal motility without readily crossing the blood-brain barrier
- Psycholeptic component provides central sedative, anxiolytic, or tranquilizing effects to mitigate stress-related GI symptoms
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to methylscopolamine, belladonna alkaloids, or any psycholeptic component
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Obstructive uropathy (e.g., bladder neck obstruction due to prostatic hyperplasia)
- Obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., achalasia, pyloroduodenal stenosis, paralytic ileus)
- Severe ulcerative colitis or toxic megacolon
- Myasthenia gravis
Adverse Reactions
- Dry mouth, blurred vision, and mydriasis
- Constipation and urinary retention
- Tachycardia and palpitations
- Drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, and cognitive dulling due to the psycholeptic component
- Reduced sweating leading to potential heat intolerance
Drug Interactions
- Enhanced anticholinergic effects when co-administered with other anticholinergic drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, or antihistamines
- Central nervous system depression potentiation when combined with alcohol, opioids, barbiturates, or other sedatives/psycholeptics
- Potential altered absorption of other oral medications due to delayed gastric emptying and decreased GI motility caused by the anticholinergic agent
