- Spasmodic dysmenorrhea
- Visceral pain associated with smooth muscle spasm
Mechanism of Action
- Butylscopolamine acts as a peripheral anticholinergic/antispasmodic agent, blocking muscarinic receptors on smooth muscle
- Analgesic component (e.g., paracetamol) inhibits prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS and periphery to provide pain relief
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to butylscopolamine, paracetamol, or anticholinergics
- Myasthenia gravis
- Megacolon
- Narrow-angle glaucoma
- Prostatic hypertrophy with urinary retention
- Tachycardia
Adverse Reactions
- Xerostomia (dry mouth)
- Visual accommodation disturbances
- Tachycardia
- Constipation
- Urinary retention
- Hepatotoxicity (associated with paracetamol overdose)
Drug Interactions
- Enhancement of anticholinergic effects with tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, and amantadine
- Antagonism of gastrointestinal motility effects with prokinetic agents (e.g., metoclopramide)
- Increased risk of paracetamol hepatotoxicity with chronic alcohol use or enzyme inducers
