Forms & Strengths
- injection: 5g/10ml
- tablet: 250mg, 500mg
Adult Dosing
- hepatic encephalopathy: 5-10g IV daily
- cirrhosis with hyperammonemia: 250-500mg PO q8h
Pediatric Dosing
- safety and efficacy not established
- avoid use in pediatric patients
Indications
- hepatic encephalopathy
- cirrhosis with hyperammonemia
Mechanism of Action
- stimulates ureagenesis
- reduces ammonia levels
Contraindications
- known hypersensitivity
- severe renal impairment
Adverse Reactions
- headache
- nausea
- vomiting
- abdominal pain
Drug Interactions
- increased risk of respiratory depression with benzodiazepines
- decreased efficacy with anticonvulsants
