Forms & Strengths
- tablet: 5mg
- oral solution: 5mg/5mL
Adult Dosing
- initial dose: 5mg, tid
- maintenance dose: 5-10mg, tid
- max dose: 15mg, tid
Pediatric Dosing
- not recommended for children under 12 years
- 12-18 years: 5mg, tid
Indications
- treatment of constipation
- bowel preparation for radiological and endoscopic examinations
Mechanism of Action
- stimulates peristalsis by direct action on colonic mucosa
- increases intestinal motility
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to bisoxatin or other anthraquinone derivatives
- intestinal obstruction or perforation
- inflammatory bowel diseases
Adverse Reactions
- abdominal cramps
- diarrhea
- rectal bleeding
Drug Interactions
- increased risk of gastrointestinal side effects with other stimulant laxatives
- reduced absorption of oral medications
