Forms & Strengths
- Tablet: cascara sagrada 120 mg
- Liquid extract: 1:1 in 25% alcohol
- Capsule: cascara sagrada 425 mg
- Tincture: 1:5 in 20% alcohol
Adult Dosing
- Oral: 1-2 capsules or tablets, 1-2 times daily
- Tincture: 5-10 mL, 1-2 times daily, in water
- Liquid extract: 2-5 mL, 1-2 times daily, in water
Pediatric Dosing
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
- 12-18 years: half the adult dose
Indications
- Constipation
- Preparation for radiologic examination
- Preoperative bowel preparation
Mechanism of Action
- Stimulates intestinal peristalsis
- Increases water and electrolyte secretion into the intestinal lumen
Contraindications
- Intestinal obstruction
- Undiagnosed abdominal pain
- Gastrointestinal inflammation
- Hemorrhoids
Adverse Reactions
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Nausea and vomiting
Drug Interactions
- May interact with anticoagulants, increasing the risk of bleeding
- May decrease the absorption of other medications
