Forms & Strengths
- rectal suppository 100mg
- rectal suppository 250mg
- enema solution
Adult Dosing
- 1 suppository rectally as a single dose
- 1 enema rectally as a single dose
Pediatric Dosing
- 1/2 suppository (50mg) rectally as a single dose for children 6-12 years
- 1/4 suppository (25mg) rectally as a single dose for children 3-6 years
- use not recommended for children under 3 years
Indications
- treatment of constipation
- bowel preparation for surgical or diagnostic procedures
Mechanism of Action
- stimulates bowel movements by increasing peristalsis
- softens stool by increasing water and electrolyte absorption
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to sodium lauryl sulfoacetate
- inflammatory bowel disease
- gastrointestinal obstruction
Adverse Reactions
- rectal irritation
- abdominal cramps
- diarrhea
- nausea
Drug Interactions
- antacids may reduce efficacy
- concomitant use with other stimulant laxatives not recommended
