Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 0.5g, 1g
- Suspension: 0.25g/5mL
Adult Dosing
- UTI: 1g qid
- Dysentery: 1-2g tid
- Typhoid: 2g qid
Pediatric Dosing
- 20-30mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses
- Max dose: 2g/day
- Not recommended for children under 3 months
Indications
- Urinary tract infections
- Shigellosis
- Salmonellosis
- Typhoid fever
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial folic acid synthesis
- Interferes with bacterial growth and multiplication
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
- Severe liver or kidney dysfunction
- Pregnancy and lactation
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Allergic reactions
- Hepatotoxicity
- Nephrotoxicity
- Hemolytic anemia
Drug Interactions
- Antacids: decrease absorption
- PABA: decrease efficacy
- Warfarin: increase anticoagulant effect
- Phenytoin: increase phenytoin levels
