Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 100mg, 200mg
- Suspension: 100mg/5mL, 200mg/5mL
- Capsules: 200mg
Adult Dosing
- Acute diarrhea: 200mg every 8 hours for 5-7 days
- Chronic diarrhea: 200mg every 8 hours as needed
Pediatric Dosing
- Infants (0-6 months): not recommended
- Children (7-12 years): 100mg every 8 hours for 5-7 days
- Adolescents (13-18 years): 200mg every 8 hours for 5-7 days
Indications
- Acute and chronic diarrhea
- Enteritis
- Dysentery
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV
- Exhibits antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to nifuroxazide or other nitrofuran derivatives
- Pregnancy and lactation
- G6PD deficiency
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Hepatic: elevated liver enzymes
- Dermatologic: rash, pruritus
Drug Interactions
- Antacids: decrease nifuroxazide absorption
- Neuromuscular blockers: increase risk of respiratory depression
- Warfarin: increase anticoagulant effect
