Forms & Strengths
- Oral powder in sachet: 3 g
Adult Dosing
- Acute diarrhea: 3 g (one sachet) dissolved in 50 mL of water, 3 times daily for up to 7 days
- Chronic painful gastrointestinal conditions: 3 g three times daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Children under 1 year: 1 sachet daily divided in 3 doses
- Children 1 to 2 years: 1 to 2 sachets daily divided in 2 to 3 doses
- Children over 2 years: 2 to 3 sachets daily divided in 3 doses
Indications
- Treatment of acute infectious diarrhea in adults and children
- Symptomatic treatment of chronic functional gastrointestinal pain in adults
Mechanism of Action
- Natural aluminum magnesium silicate with high adsorptive capacity
- Binds to gastrointestinal luminal toxins, bacteria, and rotavirus
- Coats the intestinal mucosa to protect and restore the mucosal barrier without altering intestinal motility
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to diosmectite or excipients
- Intestinal obstruction
Adverse Reactions
- Constipation (common, dose-dependent)
- Flatulence
- Vomiting
- Pruritus or urticaria (rare hypersensitivity)
Drug Interactions
- May decrease the absorption rate and/or extent of concomitantly administered oral medications
- Administer other oral drugs at least 2 hours apart from diosmectite to prevent reduced bioavailability
