albumin tannate
A07XA01
Forms & Strengths
- Oral powder
- Oral tablets/granules
Adult Dosing
- Acute diarrhea: 1.5 g to 3 g (approx. 3 to 5 tablets or equivalent powder) every 3 to 4 hours, adjusted based on clinical response.
Pediatric Dosing
- Infants and young children: 0.25 g to 0.5 g per dose, administered 3 to 4 times daily, mixed with food or liquid.
Indications
- Symptomatic treatment of acute non-specific diarrhea
- Adjuvant therapy in acute gastroenteritis
Mechanism of Action
- Combines protein (albumin) and tannic acid; gastric acid-resistant, releasing tannic acid in the intestine.
- Tannic acid precipitates proteins on the intestinal mucosa, forming a protective coating and exerting a mild astringent, anti-secretory, and anti-inflammatory effect on the gut wall.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to albumin, tannic acid, or tannins
- Severe acute dysentery with high fever or bloody stools where microbial clearance is prioritized
- Intestinal obstruction
Adverse Reactions
- Constipation (with excessive dosing)
- Nausea and gastric irritation
- Mild gastrointestinal discomfort
Drug Interactions
- May impair or delay the gastrointestinal absorption of concurrently administered oral medications due to mucosal binding and astringent properties.
- Iron preparations: tannins can chelate iron, reducing its absorption and efficacy.
