Forms & Strengths
- 2.5mg tablets
- 5mg tablets
Adult Dosing
- 2.5mg or 5mg once daily
- Dose adjustment for renal impairment: 2.5mg once daily for CrCl <50ml/min
Pediatric Dosing
- Not established for patients under 18 years
Indications
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise
- To improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes
Mechanism of Action
- Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor
- Increases the levels of incretin hormones
- Enhances the release of insulin when glucose is elevated
Contraindications
- History of pancreatitis
- Hypersensitivity to saxagliptin or its ingredients
Adverse Reactions
- Headache
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Urinary tract infection
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Pancreatitis
Drug Interactions
- Strong CYP3A4/5 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole): may increase saxagliptin levels
- Digoxin: saxagliptin may increase digoxin levels
