potassium hydrogentartrate
A12BA03
Adult Dosing
- Potassium supplementation: 1 to 2 g (approx. 5.5 to 11 mmol of potassium) daily, divided with meals, adjusted according to serum potassium levels.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not well established; dosage must be individualized based on body weight and serum potassium monitoring, typically under specialist supervision.
Indications
- Prevention or treatment of potassium deficiency (hypokalemia) when other potassium salts are poorly tolerated or contraindicated.
Mechanism of Action
- Provides exogenous potassium ions to maintain intracellular-to-extracellular potassium gradient, essential for nerve conduction, cardiac function, and acid-base balance.
Contraindications
- Hyperkalemia
- Conditions associated with severe potassium retention (e.g., acute renal failure, severe renal impairment, Addison's disease)
- Concomitant use of potassium-sparing diuretics without close monitoring
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal irritation (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort)
- Hyperkalemia in high doses or impaired renal function
Drug Interactions
- Potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone, amiloride): increased risk of severe hyperkalemia
- ACE inhibitors and ARBs: increased risk of hyperkalemia due to decreased aldosterone production
- NSAIDs: potential for decreased renal clearance and increased serum potassium levels
