Forms & Strengths
- Oral solution: 290-300 mg/5 mL
- Tablets: 100-200 mg
- Powder for oral solution: variable strength
Adult Dosing
- Constipation: 200-400 mL of oral solution at bedtime
- Bowel preparation: 300 mL of oral solution in the evening and again in the morning
- Magnesium deficiency: individualized dosing
Pediatric Dosing
- Children 6-12 years: 100-200 mL of oral solution at bedtime for constipation
- Children under 6 years: not recommended or individualized dosing under medical supervision
Indications
- Treatment of constipation
- Bowel preparation before surgical or diagnostic procedures
- Magnesium deficiency or hypomagnesemia
Mechanism of Action
- Osmotic laxative, increasing water in the intestinal lumen
- Magnesium ions can help stimulate intestinal peristalsis
Contraindications
- Gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation
- Undiagnosed abdominal pain
- Severe renal impairment
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal cramps
- Diarrhea
- Nausea and vomiting
Drug Interactions
- Tetracyclines and quinolones: decreased absorption
- Bisphosphonates: decreased absorption
- Warfarin: potential for increased INR
