magnesium aspartate
A12CC05
Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 5 mEq (60.8 mg) elemental magnesium
- Oral powder / granules: varies by formulation
- Oral liquid solutions: varies by formulation
Adult Dosing
- Magnesium deficiency: 5 to 10 mEq elemental magnesium daily in divided doses
- Dietary supplement: 5 mEq daily or as directed by healthcare provider
- Max daily dose: dependent on clinical response and serum magnesium levels, avoiding severe diarrhea
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not well established in pediatric populations
- Use weight-based dosing strictly under pediatric supervision if indicated for documented hypomagnesemia
Indications
- Prevention and treatment of magnesium deficiency
- Adjuvant therapy in conditions associated with muscle cramps linked to low magnesium status
- Dietary supplementation
Mechanism of Action
- Magnesium is an essential intracellular cation and cofactor for numerous enzymatic reactions
- Regulates neuromuscular excitability, vasomotor tone, and cardiac electrical activity
- Aspartate acts as a carrier moiety to facilitate mineral absorption across the intestinal mucosa
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to magnesium aspartate or any formulation excipients
- Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min) or risk of hypermagnesemia
- Heart block or severe myocardial damage
- Addison's disease
Adverse Reactions
- Diarrhea and abdominal discomfort (dose-dependent osmotic laxative effect)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Flatulence
- Hypermagnesemia (in patients with renal insufficiency)
- Muscle weakness, lethargy, or hypotension (signs of toxicity)
Drug Interactions
- Decreases absorption of oral tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, bisphosphonates, and iron salts through chelation; separate administration by 2 to 3 hours
- Neuromuscular blocking agents: may enhance or prolong neuromuscular blockade
- Potassium-sparing diuretics: increased risk of hyperkalemia and altered divalent cation balance
- Digitalis glycosides: concurrent use requires caution, as electrolyte shifts can precipitate cardiac arrhythmias
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
