Forms & Strengths

Oral tablets: 10 mg
Oral suspension: 5 mg/mL

Adult Dosing

10 mg to 20 mg orally daily
Course of therapy typically ranges from 4 to 6 weeks
Intermittent dosing cycles may be employed based on clinical response

Pediatric Dosing

Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established
Use in children is generally contraindicated due to risks of premature epiphyseal closure

Indications

Management of conditions requiring an increase in protein synthesis
Adjunctive therapy for catabolic states, severe tissue wasting, and debilitating illness
Promotion of weight gain and recovery following major surgery or trauma

Mechanism of Action

Synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid derived from testosterone
Binds to intracellular androgen receptors in target tissues
Stimulates cellular protein synthesis while decreasing amino acid catabolism
Enhances nitrogen retention and red blood cell production via erythropoietin stimulation

Contraindications

Known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate or male breast
Pregnancy and lactation due to virilizing effects on the fetus
Known hypersensitivity to quinbolone or any formulation excipients
Severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac dysfunction

Adverse Reactions

Hepatotoxicity including cholestatic jaundice, peliosis hepatis, and hepatic neoplasms
Fluid retention, peripheral edema, and electrolyte imbalances
Virilization in females (acne, hirsutism, voice deepening, clitoromegaly)
Testicular atrophy, oligospermia, and gynecomastia in males
Dyslipidemia with decreased HDL and increased LDL cholesterol

Drug Interactions

Potentiation of oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), increasing bleeding risk
Enhanced hypoglycemic effects with insulin and oral antidiabetic agents
Increased risk of edema when coadministered with ACTH or corticosteroids
Potential hepatotoxicity synergism with other known hepatotoxic drugs
