oxabolone cipionate
A14AB03
Forms & Strengths
- Injectable solution: 25 mg/mL in oil
Adult Dosing
- Intramuscular: 25 mg to 50 mg every 1 to 2 weeks for anabolic indications
- Duration of therapy typically limited to 4 to 8 weeks to minimize androgenic side effects and hepatotoxicity
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established
- Generally contraindicated in children due to risk of premature epiphyseal closure and impaired linear growth
Indications
- Management of conditions requiring tissue-building and nitrogen retention
- Adjunctive therapy for chronic debilitating diseases, severe catabolic states, and recovery from major surgery or trauma
Mechanism of Action
- Synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) derived from testosterone
- Binds to intracellular androgen receptors in target tissues, promoting nitrogen retention, protein synthesis, and inhibition of protein catabolism
Contraindications
- Known or suspected carcinoma of the prostate or breast in males
- Pregnancy and lactation due to virilization risks of the fetus
- Severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac impairment
- Hypersensitivity to oxabolone cipionate or any component of the formulation
Adverse Reactions
- Hepatic: Cholestatic jaundice, peliosis hepatis, hepatocellular neoplasia with prolonged use
- Endocrine/Metabolic: Suppression of spermatogenesis, testicular atrophy, amenorrhea, virilization in females (hirsutism, deepening of voice, clitoromegaly)
- Cardiovascular: Edema, dyslipidemia (decreased HDL, increased LDL), increased risk of hypertension and atherosclerosis
- Psychiatric: Aggression, mood swings, dependence, depression upon withdrawal
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants: Potentiates the effect of oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), increasing bleeding risk; monitoring of INR required
- Insulin and oral antidiabetic agents: Anabolic steroids may decrease blood glucose and insulin requirements
- Corticosteroids: Concurrent use increases the risk of severe edema and fluid retention
- Hepatotoxic drugs: Co-administration with other potentially hepatotoxic agents increases the risk of adverse liver effects
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
