Forms & Strengths
- Injection: 20,000 anti-Xa IU/mL in 2 mL vials
- Injection: 10,000 anti-Xa IU/mL in 2 mL vials
Adult Dosing
- Treatment of deep vein thrombosis with or without pulmonary embolism: 175 anti-Xa IU/kg subcutaneously once daily for at least 6 days
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established
Indications
- Treatment of acute symptomatic deep vein thrombosis with or without pulmonary embolism when administered in conjunction with warfarin sodium
Mechanism of Action
- Low molecular weight heparin that potentiates the action of antithrombin III, resulting in preferential inactivation of factor Xa and thrombin
Contraindications
- Active major bleeding
- History of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT)
- Hypersensitivity to tinzaparin, heparin, or pork products
Adverse Reactions
- Hemorrhage
- Thrombocytopenia including HIT
- Injection site hematoma
- Elevated transaminases
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and NSAIDs increase the risk of hemorrhage
- Pharmacodynamic antagonists include systemic corticosteroids and antihistamines
