Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: Various strengths calculated as elemental iron
Adult Dosing
- Iron deficiency anemia: 50-100 mg elemental iron equivalent 3 times daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Iron deficiency anemia (Children >12 years): Consult specific product labeling; generally lower mg/kg dosing of elemental iron per day divided in 1-3 doses
Indications
- Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia
Mechanism of Action
- Replaces iron found in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and other enzymes; allows the transport of oxygen via hemoglobin through the body
Contraindications
- Hemochromatosis
- Hemosiderosis
- Hemolytic anemia
- Known hypersensitivity to iron salts
Adverse Reactions
- Constipation
- Dark stools
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Epigastric pain
- Vomiting
Drug Interactions
- Antacids and proton pump inhibitors decrease iron absorption
- Iron decreases absorption of fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, levothyroxine, and bisphosphonates
- Ascorbic acid increases iron absorption
