Forms & Strengths
- Solution for injection: 10-20 mg of iron per mL
- Ferric acetyl transferrin complex
- Liquid formulation: varies by manufacturer
Adult Dosing
- 50-100 mg of iron IV, as needed
- Dose dependent on hemoglobin and iron levels
- Total dose not to exceed 1000 mg of iron
Pediatric Dosing
- No established pediatric dosing
- Consult healthcare provider for off-label use
Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anemia
- Maintenance of adequate iron levels
Mechanism of Action
- Replenishes iron stores in the body
- Bound to transferrin for transport
- Ferric ion replaces deficient iron in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ferric acetyl transferrin or its components
- Iron overload or hemochromatosis
Adverse Reactions
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Injection site reactions
- Nausea, vomiting, headache
- Iron overload with prolonged use
Drug Interactions
- May decrease efficacy of levodopa, penicillamine
- May increase risk of iron overload with vitamin C
