Forms & Strengths
- Injectable solution 50 mg iron/mL
- Injectable solution 100 mg iron/2 mL
Adult Dosing
- Total dose of 1000-2000 mg iron for treatment of iron deficiency anemia
- Administer by IV or IM injection
Pediatric Dosing
- Not established for pediatric patients under 4 years old
- For pediatric patients over 4 years old, administer 0.5 mL (25 mg iron) per kg body weight up to 1000 mg
Indications
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Prevention of iron deficiency anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease
Mechanism of Action
- Replenishes iron stores in the body
- Stimulates erythropoiesis
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to ferric protein succinylate
- Anemia not caused by iron deficiency
Adverse Reactions
- Injection site pain
- Headache
- Flushing
- Dizziness
- Allergic reactions (rare)
Drug Interactions
- Antacids and anti-diarrheal medications may reduce iron absorption
- Oral iron supplements may cause gastrointestinal side effects when taken with ferric protein succinylate
