Forms & Strengths
- Injection: ferrous amino acid complex 50 mg Fe and folic acid 350 mcg/mL
- Tablet: ferrous amino acid complex 50-100 mg Fe and folic acid 500-1000 mcg
Adult Dosing
- Iron deficiency anemia: 50-100 mg Fe and 500-1000 mcg folic acid orally once to twice daily
- Pregnancy: 50-100 mg Fe and 500-1000 mcg folic acid orally once daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Infants and children: 1-5 mg Fe/kg and 50-100 mcg folic acid/kg orally once to twice daily
- Adolescents: 50-100 mg Fe and 500-1000 mcg folic acid orally once to twice daily
Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency anemia
- Prevention of iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy
- Prevention of folic acid deficiency
Mechanism of Action
- Ferrous amino acid complex: replenishes iron stores, essential for hemoglobin synthesis
- Folic acid: co-factor for nucleic acid synthesis, prevents megaloblastic anemia
Contraindications
- Hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis
- Hypersensitivity to ferrous amino acid complex or folic acid
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
- Allergic reactions: rash, pruritus, anaphylaxis
- Iron overload: hepatotoxicity, cardiac dysfunction
Drug Interactions
- Antacids: decrease iron absorption
- Tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones: decrease iron absorption
- Folate antagonists: decrease folic acid efficacy
