Forms & Strengths
- Colloidal solution for intravenous use
- Typically 30-40% w/v fluorocarbon concentration
Adult Dosing
- Typically 2-4 mL/kg body weight
- Dosage may vary depending on intended use and patient condition
- Not a substitute for whole blood or blood components
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not well established in pediatric patients
- Dosing should be individualized under close medical supervision
Indications
- Perioperative blood volume expansion
- Resuscitation in hypovolemic shock
- Limited use in certain diagnostic procedures, such as retinal angiography
Mechanism of Action
- Increases intravascular blood volume
- Delivers oxygen to tissues due to high solubility of oxygen in fluorocarbons
Contraindications
- Known allergy to fluorocarbons
- Severe anemia or other conditions requiring whole blood or blood component transfusion
- Cerebral edema or other conditions of increased intracranial pressure
Adverse Reactions
- Allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis or hives
- Respiratory issues, including dyspnea and bronchospasm
- Cardiovascular effects, such as hypotension and tachycardia
Drug Interactions
- Potential interactions with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and other lipid-based therapies
- May affect laboratory tests measuring total cholesterol and other lipids
- Avoid use with known hepatotoxic agents due to potential increased risk of liver injury
