hemoglobin raffimer
B05AA09
Forms & Strengths
- Intravenous solution: 10 g/dL hemoglobin in 0.9% sodium chloride
Adult Dosing
- Experimental oxygen therapeutic; no longer approved or commercially available
- Historical clinical trial dosing: 100 mL to 1000 mL IV infusion administered at variable rates based on clinical trials for acute blood loss
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
Indications
- Investigated historically for the treatment of acute anemia and to reduce the need for allogeneic red blood cell transfusions in surgical patients
- Withdrawn from clinical development due to lack of efficacy and safety concerns
Mechanism of Action
- Polymerized bovine-derived hemoglobin that binds oxygen in the lungs and releases it to hypoxic tissues
- Acts as an intravascular colloidal volume expander and oxygen carrier
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to bovine hemoglobin products
- Conditions where increased intravascular volume or oncotic pressure poses a high clinical risk (e.g., severe congestive heart failure)
Adverse Reactions
- Vasoconstriction and systemic hypertension
- Gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Transient methemoglobinemia
- Discoloration of plasma, urine, and skin
- Increased risk of myocardial infarction and mortality in historical clinical trials
Drug Interactions
- Incompatible with standard blood products and intravenous solutions when co-infused in the same line
- May interfere with various clinical laboratory assays due to optical interference from hemoglobin color
