Forms & Strengths
- injected suspension for intravenous use
- variable cell dose depending on patient weight and indication
Adult Dosing
- dosing is based on the number of total nucleated cells per kilogram of recipient body weight
- typical dose range: 2-6 x 10^7 total nucleated cells per kilogram
- single dose infusion
Pediatric Dosing
- similar dosing as for adults
- based on the number of total nucleated cells per kilogram of recipient body weight
- dosage may require adjustment based on patient's condition and weight
Indications
- treatment of hematologic malignancies
- severe aplastic anemia
- myelodysplastic syndromes
- inherited disorders such as Hurler syndrome and adrenoleukodystrophy
- immunodeficiency disorders
Mechanism of Action
- stem cells from umbilical cord blood differentiate into all blood cell types
- replenishes and restores blood cell production in the bone marrow
- immunomodulatory effects
Contraindications
- known allergy to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or Dextran 40
- active, uncontrolled infections
Adverse Reactions
- infusion reactions (fever, chills, rigors, nausea, vomiting)
- graft-versus-host disease
- infections (bacterial, viral, fungal)
- organ toxicity
- immunosuppression
Drug Interactions
- avoid administration of live vaccines for at least 2 months after infusion
- monitor for interactions with immunosuppressive drugs
- potential interactions with other hematopoietic growth factors
