BLOOD AND BLOOD FORMING ORGANS › BLOOD SUBSTITUTES AND PERFUSION SOLUTIONS › I.V. SOLUTIONS › Solutions for parenteral nutrition
combinations
B05BA10
Forms & Strengths
- Intravenous infusion: multi-chamber bags containing amino acids, electrolytes, dextrose, and lipid emulsions in various volume and composition ratios
Adult Dosing
- Individualized based on patient energy, fluid, and nitrogen requirements
- Typical amino acid dosage: 1.0 to 2.0 g/kg/day
- Maximum daily infusion rate and total volume determined by individual metabolic capacity and fluid tolerance
Pediatric Dosing
- Individualized based on age, weight, and metabolic demands
- Neonates and pediatric patients require formulations specifically adapted for pediatric amino acid and electrolyte profiles
Indications
- Provision of parenteral nutrition (amino acids, calories, electrolytes, and essential fatty acids) via central or peripheral venous access when oral or enteral nutrition is impossible, insufficient, or contraindicated
Mechanism of Action
- Provides exogenous macronutrients and micronutrients to maintain or restore positive nitrogen balance, supply energy substrates, prevent essential fatty acid deficiency, and support tissue synthesis and metabolic function
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to egg, soy, or peanut proteins, or active substances
- Severe liver failure or hepatic coma
- Severe renal failure without renal replacement therapy
- Inborn errors of amino acid metabolism
- Severe blood coagulation disorders
- Unstable hemodynamics or severe post-traumatic shock
Adverse Reactions
- Hyperglycemia
- Hyperlipidemia
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Refeeding syndrome
- Infection and sepsis at the catheter site
- Venous thrombosis or phlebitis
Drug Interactions
- Coumarin derivatives and anticoagulants: potential interference with anticoagulant activity due to vitamin K content in lipid emulsions
- Insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents: parenteral nutrition affects glucose levels, requiring dosage adjustments
- Drugs incompatible with specific components (e.g., calcium and phosphate precipitation risk)
