Forms & Strengths
- Mouthwash: 0.05% solution
- Lozenges: 1.4-2.6mg
- Gargle: 0.05-0.1% solution
- Topical solution: 0.05-2% solution
Adult Dosing
- Mouthwash: 15ml, swish for 15-30 seconds, 2-3 times a day
- Lozenges: 1-2 lozenges, 3-5 times a day
- Gargle: 15ml, gargle for 15-30 seconds, 2-3 times a day
Pediatric Dosing
- Children under 6 years: not recommended
- Children 6-12 years: mouthwash, 7.5ml, swish for 15-30 seconds, 2-3 times a day
- Children over 12 years: adult dosing
Indications
- Antiseptic mouthwash for oral hygiene
- Treatment and prevention of plaque and gingivitis
- Reduction of dental biofilm
- Symptomatic relief of sore throat
Mechanism of Action
- Cetylpyridinium acts as a cationic surfactant
- Disrupts bacterial cell membranes, leading to cell death
- Inhibits the growth of a wide range of microorganisms
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cetylpyridinium
- Not recommended for children under 6 years due to choking hazard
Adverse Reactions
- Oral and pharyngeal mucosal irritation
- Gastrointestinal upset
- Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
- Discoloration of dental surfaces
Drug Interactions
- Incompatible with anionic surfactants
