Forms & Strengths
- 50mg, 100mg oral tablets
- 0.2% topical solution
Adult Dosing
- 50-100mg every 6 hours for urinary tract infection
- 100mg at bedtime for prophylaxis
Pediatric Dosing
- 5-7mg/kg/day divided every 6 hours, max 400mg/day
- dosage may be adjusted based on renal function
Indications
- treatment of urinary tract infections
- prophylaxis of urinary tract infections
Mechanism of Action
- inhibits bacterial enzymes and DNA synthesis
- bactericidal activity in urine
Contraindications
- renal failure, anuria
- diabetes
- pregnancy at term or near term
Adverse Reactions
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- abdominal pain, headache
- rash, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis
- neuropathy, peripheral neuritis
Drug Interactions
- increased risk of neuropathy with sulfonylureas
- increased risk of toxicity with probenecid
- decreased effectiveness with urinary alkalinizers
