Forms & Strengths
- Oral tablets: 100 mg
- Injectable solution: 50 mg/mL
Adult Dosing
- Angina pectoris: 100 mg to 300 mg orally daily in divided doses
- Intravenous administration: 50 mg to 100 mg slowly per day in acute coronary insufficiency
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established
Indications
- Management of chronic angina pectoris
- Adjunctive treatment of coronary insufficiency
Mechanism of Action
- Coronary vasodilator structurally related to amiodarone
- Increases coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen supply by relaxing vascular smooth muscle
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to benziodarone or iodine-containing compounds
- Severe hypotension or cardiogenic shock
- High-grade atrioventricular block without a pacemaker
- Severe hepatic impairment
Adverse Reactions
- Gastrointestinal distress, nausea, and abdominal pain
- Dizziness, headache, and flushing
- Elevated liver transaminases
- Hypotension upon rapid intravenous administration
Drug Interactions
- Potentiation of hypotensive effects when co-administered with antihypertensive agents
- Potential interactions with other negative chronotropes or antiarrhythmics
- May alter thyroid function test results due to iodine moiety
