Forms & Strengths
- Tablets: 250mg, 500mg
- Oral solution: 500mg/5mL
Adult Dosing
- Initial dose: 1-2g orally in 2-4 divided doses
- Maintenance dose: 1-3g orally in 2-4 divided doses
- Dose adjustment: Based on blood pressure response
Pediatric Dosing
- Not established for pediatric use
- Use with caution in children, dose not established
Indications
- Hypertension management
- Treatment of pheochromocytoma
- Preoperative management of pheochromocytoma
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits tyrosine hydroxylase
- Suppresses catecholamine synthesis
- Reduces peripheral resistance and blood pressure
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metirosine
- Extrapyramidal disorders
- Parkinson's disease
Adverse Reactions
- Extrapyramidal symptoms
- Sedation
- Dry mouth
- Nausea and vomiting
Drug Interactions
- MAO inhibitors: Increase risk of adverse effects
- Tricyclic antidepressants: Increase risk of adverse effects
- Levodopa: Decrease efficacy of levodopa
