Forms & Strengths
- Tablets 12.5 mg
- Solution for injection 10 mg/mL
Adult Dosing
- Oral: 12.5 mg to 25 mg three times daily
- Intramuscular or intravenous: 10 mg to 20 mg as needed, up to several times daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established; use generally not recommended
Indications
- Peripheral vascular disorders (e.g., Raynaud's syndrome, intermittent claudication)
- Cerebrovascular insufficiency
- Threatened abortion (historical/off-label use)
Mechanism of Action
- Acts as a direct peripheral vasodilator and sympathomimetic amine
- Relaxes vascular smooth muscle, particularly in peripheral and cerebral beds
- Exerts mild beta-adrenergic agonist effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to bamethan or any component of the formulation
- Recent myocardial infarction
- Severe tachyarrhythmias
- Acute hemorrhage
- Glaucoma
Adverse Reactions
- Palpitations and tachycardia
- Flushing and warm sensations
- Hypotension (especially postural)
- Dizziness or headache
- Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting)
Drug Interactions
- Enhanced hypotensive effect when co-administered with other antihypertensive agents or vasodilators
- Additive tachycardic or arrhythmogenic effects with other sympathomimetics
