carteolol
C07AA15
Adult Dosing
- Glaucoma / Ocular Hypertension: Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) twice daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established
Indications
- Reduction of intraocular pressure in patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension
Mechanism of Action
- Non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA), reducing aqueous humor production
Contraindications
- Bronchial asthma or history of bronchial asthma
- Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Sinus bradycardia
- Second- or third-degree atrioventricular block
- Overt cardiac failure
- Cardiogenic shock
- Hypersensitivity to carteolol or any component
Adverse Reactions
- Ocular stinging, burning, or discomfort upon instillation
- Blurred vision
- Tearing
- Conjunctivitis
- Systemic beta-blocker effects (bradycardia, hypotension, fatigue, bronchospasm) due to systemic absorption
Drug Interactions
- Systemic beta-blockers: additive systemic beta-blocking effects
- Calcium channel blockers: potential for atrioventricular conduction disturbances and hypotension
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs (e.g., reserpine): potential additive hypotensive and bradycardic effects
- Digitalis glycosides: concurrent use may prolong AV conduction time
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
