acebutolol
C07AB04
Forms & Strengths
- Capsule: 200 mg
- Capsule: 400 mg
Adult Dosing
- Hypertension: Initial 400 mg orally once daily or 200 mg twice daily; maintenance range 200-800 mg daily in 1-2 divided doses
- Ventricular Arrhythmias: Initial 200 mg orally twice daily; increase gradually to 600-1200 mg daily
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established
Indications
- Management of hypertension (alone or with other agents)
- Management of premature ventricular contractions
Mechanism of Action
- Cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA)
- Decreases heart rate, myocardial contractility, and blood pressure with less resting bradycardia than non-ISA beta-blockers
Contraindications
- Overt cardiac failure
- Cardiogenic shock
- Second- or third-degree atrioventricular block
- Severe bradycardia
- Hypersensitivity to acebutolol
Adverse Reactions
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Bradycardia
- Hypotension
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Dyspnea
Drug Interactions
- Calcium channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem): Increased risk of bradycardia and AV block
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs (reserpine): Additive effect on reducing sympathetic tone
- Digitalis glycosides: Increased risk of bradycardia and AV conduction delay
- Insulin and oral hypoglycemics: May mask symptoms of hypoglycemia
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
