omega-3-triglycerides incl. other esters and acids
C10AX06
Forms & Strengths
- Oral capsules: 1,000 mg
- Oral capsules: 1,200 mg
- Oral liquid formulations
- Injectable lipid emulsions (parenteral nutrition)
Adult Dosing
- Hypertriglyceridemia: 2 to 4 g orally daily administered as a single dose or in divided doses
- Parenteral nutrition: 1 to 2 g/kg/day IV as part of total parenteral nutrition
Pediatric Dosing
- Parenteral nutrition (pediatric/neonatal): 1 to 3 g/kg/day IV
- Hypertriglyceridemia: Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients
Indications
- Adjunct to diet to reduce triglyceride levels in adult patients with severe (>= 500 mg/dL) hypertriglyceridemia
- Source of calories and essential fatty acids for parenteral nutrition
Mechanism of Action
- Decreases hepatic synthesis and secretion of very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL-TG)
- Increases plasma lipoprotein lipase activity
- Promotes fatty acid oxidation in the liver
- Alters cell membrane fluidity and eicosanoid production
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fish, shellfish, or any component of the formulation
- Severe hepatic impairment (for specific oral prescription formulations)
- Severe disorders of fat metabolism such as pathologic hyperlipemia
Adverse Reactions
- Eructation
- Dyspepsia
- Taste perversion (fishy taste)
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Increased risk of bleeding at high doses
- Elevated ALT and AST
Drug Interactions
- Anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents: May increase the risk of bleeding due to potential additive antiplatelet effects
- Statins: Often co-administered safely for mixed dyslipidemia, though monitor for additive myopathy risks rarely
Curated Content: Needs Vetting Before Put to Clinical Use
