Forms & Strengths
- cream 2%
- ointment 2%
- tablet 250mg
- tablet 500mg
Adult Dosing
- 250-500mg orally twice daily
- apply topical formulation 3-4 times daily
Pediatric Dosing
- 20-30mg/kg/day orally in 2-3 divided doses
- not recommended for children under 1 year for topical use
Indications
- bacterial skin infections
- impetigo
- folliculitis
- furuncles
- infected wounds
Mechanism of Action
- inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
- binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to fusidic acid or its ingredients
- liver disease
Adverse Reactions
- gastrointestinal upset
- hepatotoxicity
- rash
- pruritus
- allergic reactions
Drug Interactions
- increased risk of hepatotoxicity with statins
- concurrent use with other hepatotoxic agents is not recommended
