Forms & Strengths
- Ointment 2% (calcium)
- Cream 2%
Adult Dosing
- Impetigo: Apply small amount to affected area 3 times daily for 3 to 5 days
- Nasal eradication of MRSA: Apply approximately 1/2 of the ointment tube into each nostril twice daily for 5 days
Pediatric Dosing
- Impetigo (Infants aged >= 2 months to 16 years): Apply small amount 3 times daily for 3 to 5 days
- Nasal colonization (Children aged >= 12 years): Apply to each nostril twice daily for 5 days
Indications
- Topical treatment of impetigo due to Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes
- Eradication of nasal colonization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) during institutional outbreaks
Mechanism of Action
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly and specifically binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase
Contraindications
- History of hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any of its excipients
- Not for intra-nasal use (ointment formulation only approved for anterior nares; cream is not for mucosal use)

- Pruritus
- Rash
- Contact dermatitis
Drug Interactions
- No significant systemic drug-drug interactions identified due to minimal systemic absorption
- Do not mix with other topical medications to avoid dilution and reduction of antibacterial efficacy
