Forms & Strengths
- Vaginal Cream: 15% (150 mg/g)
Adult Dosing
- Vulvovaginitis: Insert 1 applicatorful (approx. 5 g) intravaginally twice daily for 2 weeks
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established
Indications
- Treatment of vulvovaginitis caused by Candida albicans
- Adjunctive treatment of ulcerative colpitis
Mechanism of Action
- Competitive inhibition of bacterial para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) utilization
- Prevents synthesis of folic acid required for bacterial growth
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
- History of systemic lupus erythematosus
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment
Adverse Reactions
- Local irritation
- Burning
- Pruritus
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Systemic hypersensitivity reactions (rare)
Drug Interactions
- Local anesthetics (e.g., procaine, tetracaine) containing PABA may antagonize sulfonamide antibacterial activity
- Proteolytic enzymes used concomitantly may be inactivated by purulent exudates containing sulfonamides
