fludroxycortide and antibiotics
D07CC03
Forms & Strengths
- Fludroxycortide 0.0125% combined with antibiotic topical preparations (ointments, creams, lotions)
Adult Dosing
- Apply a thin film to the affected area 2 to 3 times daily as directed by physician
- Limit duration of continuous therapy to prevent systemic corticosteroid absorption and local skin atrophy
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients are not well established; use with caution
- Avoid use in diaper dermatitis and under occlusive dressings due to increased systemic absorption risk
Indications
- Inflammatory dermatoses responsive to topical corticosteroids with secondary bacterial infections or risk of infection
Mechanism of Action
- Fludroxycortide provides anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties via glucocorticoid receptor activation
- Antibiotic component provides local antibacterial coverage against susceptible pathogens
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fludroxycortide, other corticosteroids, or the specific antibiotic component
- Viral skin infections (e.g., varicella, herpes simplex)
- Fungal skin infections
- Tuberculous or syphilitic skin lesions
Adverse Reactions
- Local burning, itching, irritation, dryness, and folliculitis
- Skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, and acneiform eruptions with prolonged use
- Systemic corticosteroid effects (HPA axis suppression) with prolonged use, large surface areas, or occlusion
- Secondary bacterial or fungal superinfections due to immunosuppressive and antibacterial resistance effects
Drug Interactions
- Concomitant use of other local or systemic immunosuppressants may increase infection risk
- Potential for cumulative systemic toxicity with other topical or systemic corticosteroids
