Forms & Strengths
- Topical cream 0.1%
- Topical ointment 0.1%
Adult Dosing
- Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area 1 to 3 times daily
- Reduce frequency as condition improves
- Avoid continuous long-term treatment and use on large skin areas
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in infants and young children not well established
- Use with caution in children; avoid occlusive dressings and prolonged therapy to minimize systemic absorption
Indications
- Inflammatory skin diseases responsive to topical corticosteroids
- Eczema
- Contact dermatitis
- Psoriasis
Mechanism of Action
- Binds to glucocorticoid receptors, suppressing the inflammatory response
- Reduces local vasodilation and edema
- Inhibits migration of leukocytes and phagocytes to the affected area
- Suppresses release of inflammatory cytokines and mediators
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fluprednidene or other corticosteroids
- Skin lesions caused by viral infections (e.g., chickenpox, herpes simplex)
- Bacterial and fungal skin infections
- Rosacea and perioral dermatitis
- Vaccination reactions on the skin
Adverse Reactions
- Skin atrophy
- Striae atrophicae
- Telangiectasia
- Hypertrichosis
- Hypopigmentation
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Systemic effects from excessive absorption (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression)
Drug Interactions
- No significant systemic drug interactions typically reported with topical application
- Potential for increased systemic absorption if used concurrently with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Additive immunosuppressive effects with systemic corticosteroids or immunosuppressants
