Forms & Strengths
- Antiseptic solution: 1:500 to 1:1000
- Ophthalmic solution: 1:5000
- Topical solution: 1:1000 to 1:5000
Adult Dosing
- Apply topically as needed
- Use as an antiseptic for minor cuts, scrapes, and abrasions
- Ophthalmic use: 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times a day
Pediatric Dosing
- Same as adult dosing for children over 12 years old
- For children under 12 years old, use with caution and under medical supervision
- For neonates and infants, avoid use due to potential toxicity
Indications
- Antiseptic for minor cuts, scrapes, and abrasions
- Prevention of infection in minor injuries
- Ophthalmic use for conjunctivitis and blepharitis
Mechanism of Action
- Phenylmercuric borate works as a bacteriostatic agent by inhibiting bacterial growth
- Mercuric ion disrupts bacterial cell membrane and DNA synthesis
- Inhibits sulfhydryl-containing enzymes essential for microbial growth
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mercury or other components of the preparation
- Pregnancy and lactation due to potential fetal and infant toxicity
- Open wounds or damaged skin, as it may delay healing
Adverse Reactions
- Skin irritation, such as redness, itching, and burning
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Mercurialism (mercury poisoning) with prolonged or excessive use
- Ophthalmic use: blurred vision, eye irritation, and discoloration
Drug Interactions
- Incompatible with sulfhydryl-containing compounds
- May interact with other topical medications, reducing their effectiveness
- Concomitant use with other mercury-containing products increases the risk of mercury toxicity
