Adult Dosing
- Apply a thin layer to the affected area 1 to 3 times daily as directed for minor wounds or burns.
Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients not established; use generally avoided due to mercury toxicity risks.
Indications
- Antiseptic and antifungal agent for minor skin infections, wounds, and burns.
Mechanism of Action
- Exerts bacteriostatic and fungistatic effects by precipitating bacterial proteins and inactivating sulfhydryl groups via mercury ions.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to mercury-containing compounds
- Application to large, deep, or denuded skin areas
- Use in occlusive dressings or prolonged therapy due to systemic absorption risks
Adverse Reactions
- Local skin irritation
- Contact dermatitis
- Allergic sensitization
- Systemic mercury toxicity with prolonged use on broken skin (renal impairment, neurotoxicity)
Drug Interactions
- Concurrent topical iodine or other heavy metal antagonists may cause inactivation or increased irritation
- Avoid concurrent application of multiple topical antiseptic agents on the same site
