Forms & Strengths
- cream 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.1%
- gel 0.01%, 0.025%, 0.04%, 0.1%
- solution 0.05%
Adult Dosing
- apply thin layer to affected area once daily at bedtime
- start with lower concentration, increase as tolerated
- max dose: 0.1% gel/cream, no max dose for solution
Pediatric Dosing
- apply thin layer to affected area once daily at bedtime, start with lower concentration (0.025%)
- monitor for irritation and adjust dose as needed
- safety and efficacy not established < 12 years
Indications
- acne vulgaris
- fine facial wrinkles
- skin discoloration
- photoaging
Mechanism of Action
- retinoid receptor agonist
- increases cell turnover
- decreases cohesiveness of follicular epithelial cells
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity to tretinoin or any component
- eczema, sunburn, or other skin irritations
- pregnancy, especially 1st trimester
Adverse Reactions
- dryness, redness, irritation, stinging, burning
- photosensitivity
- exacerbation of eczema, rosacea, or other skin conditions
Drug Interactions
- concomitant use with benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid may increase irritation
- avoid use with other topical retinoids
- increased risk of photosensitivity with concomitant use of photosensitizing medications
